Only From The Mouths of Babes
While watching “Outfoxed” this evening, my littlest daughter, Hero, noticed that President Bush was on the screen. She said, “George Bush?” This was already funny. We answered in the affirmative, of course. Then she popped the greatest line I’ve heard yet: “Turnin’ corner…turnin’ corner.” Future progressive warrior!
In related family news, while visiting with my mother in her deaf/deaf-blind only assisted living facility she showed me a printout of an email that has been circulating around the deaf community. Apparently, deaf people across the U.S. dislike Bush, too. Over the last few years funding for closed captioning of vital sources of news and information has been cut. In addition, funding for handicapped assistance has taken a huge hit (which, for the deaf community, means less access to interpretive services, less breaks for services aimed for regular hearing folks…). My mom and her partner, Harold, both didn’t want to vote for Bush in the first place but now they’re mad. Many people within the deaf community have wondered where all their basic services have gone and why they’re not guaranteed to have the news captioned so that they can stay informed. Ah, yes, an uninformed mass can be easily confused and duped. In response to this email, she’s taken to making copies of it and has started posting them all over the building. You have to understand how great this is. She has never really cared for any president ever and has never showed any real interest in any candidate unless they spoke of social security or the deaf community. My mom the deaf activist!
