Earlier, while reading a NY Times article on the proposed NY Jets stadium, I learned of a group known as the Friends of the High Line.  Founded in 1999, Friends of the High Line is a “non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and reuse of the High Line, a 1.5-mile-long historic elevated rail structure on the West Side of Manhattan.”

Basically, the Friends wish to convert the long abandoned rail line into a linear park/trail system.  Rails-to-Trails initiatives seem to be growing in popularity and the benefits of such systems have continuously proven to be environmentally, socially, and economically beneficial. A park of this sort stretching through Manhattan would be amazing.  New York NEEDS more green space.

“The High Line will be a promenade—a linear public place where you will see and be seen. You will sense New York’s industrial past in the rivets and girders. You will perceive the future unrolling before you in an artfully designed environment of unprecedented innovation.”
