Having left Michigan over a year ago I’ve come to realize that I miss three things: my dear friends, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and a generous pint from Dragonmead Microbrewery.  That’s about it.

Dragonmead, located in Warren, MI, was a warm home during the chilly months and a refreshing stop during the hot.  The exceptionally friendly staff and the welcoming atmosphere is incomparable anywhere in Southeast Michigan and, perhaps, even beyond over the plains, mountains, and rivers.  And then there is the beer.

Living in what is known as one of the capitals of microbrewing, Portland has much to offer to please the beer drinker’s palate.  The varities here can be rather overwhelming and I’ve only cracked the outer shell of what is offered throughout the state of Oregon.  Yet, I have yet to find a beer better in quality and craftsmanship as the beer crafted at Dragonmead.  I have yet to find a beer so robust, so delicate, and so good as a pint pulled from this home away from home.  Not only is their beer exceptional, but Dragonmead has the most beers on tap made from a single producer anywhere in the world.  Yes, you read that correctly: the most beers on tap in the world.

Personally I had always been a fan of their English and Belgian Ales.  Their English ales consistently prove to be hearty and smooth, especially their Breath of the Dragon Bitter and Erik the Red.  As far as the Belgian Ales go, my tongue is partial to the Dead Monk Abbey Ale.  Not only is this the best Belgian I have ever had, but it is probably the best beer I’ve ever had, period.  It is that good.  The Final Absolution Trippel and the seasonal Grand Cru are also amazing ales not to pass on.  Other delicious notables include the Russian Imperial Stout (a close second to the Dead Monk), Under the Kilt Wee Heavy Scottish Ale, and the wintery Jul Ol Norwegian Christmas Ale.  These are just my favorites, of course, but I have never been let down by any pint pulled for me at Dragonmead.

If you live in Michigan or are passing through the Detroit area, do yourself a great favor and stop by.  Say hello to Kim Lopp, the pub manager, and tell her Cas sent you.  She’ll do you right and make sure your stay at the pub is a fantastic one.
