Trouble for Arab-Americans?
Hot off the AP wire, via the Detroit Free Press:
Nearly half of all Americans believe the U.S. government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim-Americans, according to a nationwide poll.
The survey conducted by Cornell University also found that Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims’ civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.
Researchers also found that respondents who paid more attention to television news were more likely to fear terrorist attacks and support limiting the rights of Muslim-Americans.
This is shocking! I’m really glad that we’re Maronite Catholics…..
oh my! i really can’t believe that it’s close to half. well, that would explain people’s apathy with the patriot act.
people’s apathy w/ the patriot act stems from the train of thought that goes something like, i’m not doing anything wrong, so why would i worry about this stuff? that’s the kind of crap that allowed mccarthyism to happen too.
& listen devon, stupid people can’t tell the difference between a middle eastern catholic or a muslim. shit, they can’t tell someone who is indian from someone who is lebanese.
either i constantly overestimate the kindness & decency of americans, or this poll is seriously flawed.
Good point. My barber, who is also Lebanese, was just complaining about how people think she is Puerto Rican!
When radio show hosts say derogatory things about Muslims without any repercussion it’s no wonder why half of America expresses this ignorance. Hopefully new networks like Bridges will shed some knowledge..
