Not a Day to Compromise
I felt ashamed yesterday when the DNC released a softball commercial in response to the inauguration celebrations today. Following is the text:
DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe:
Mr. President, congratulations. Democrats are eager to work with you.But make no mistake – we will not abandon our long held principles.
On Social Security, we will not let you undermine its fundamental guarantee.
On taxes, we’ll fight your efforts to shift the burden to working families.
And we’ll demand an honest foreign policy.
So as you swear to uphold the Constitution, we will be standing with you – making sure you keep that promise for all Americans.
Not ignoring the bulleted items, by opening with that line, Terry McAuliffe failed the Democratic party and us all who know that our country is treading down a path of self-destruction. In dire times, dire actions must be called for. Mr. McCauliffe failed miserably in releasing this commercial that seemed to display a tail firmily planted between its legs.
Because of this, we have many conservative Republicans who think much like a caller to NPR’s Talk of the Nation did when he expressed, first, that Democrats are exceedingly angry as well as hateful and, secondly, that Democrats need to work with them for the betterment of the U.S. However, this caller, full of the anger he accused us liberals of having, said that we need to come to understand and adapt to their ways and their churches. He said that their churches are ready to accept us and that we have to think the way they do. Now, based on this, in their eyes we are to become them, not compromise with them. These are the very roots from which sprout fundamentalist and fascist governments. Now is not the time to sit back and wonder how we can work with the far right to bring harmony to our country. There is no room for compromise. We need solid leadership that will not back down.
Where are they?
