White People Can’t Jump
After listening to Cornel West speak recently and after viewing about half of the State of the Black Union conference held in Atlanta, GA, I have come to a startling realization: white people will never lead the revolution that our American system of government so desperately needs. No matter how angry we may feel toward the Republicans and their ploy to gut the riches of our system. No matter how many cute bumper stickers we may have affixed to the rear and sides of our tiny fuel economic vehicles. No matter how many times we may march down our boulevards screaming, “No war for oil!” No matter how many times we make futile attempts at spreading the word of the white men who lead the Democratic party. No matter how vociferously we may blog our hearts out, we will not change a damned thing.
But, do you know who can push the waves of change into motion? Black people. Do you know who can actually feel angry at their disenfranchisement? Black people. Do you know who is more serious about their liberties and their freedoms? Black people? Do you know who is targeted by our thinly veiled racist administration? Black people. Who can we trust to have the energy and the moral ground to speak of God and Jesus without stumbling over their words? Black people. Who has the testicular fortitude to rail hard enough against the oppressor, lose, and then return to fight another day to ultimately win? Black people. Who are our leaders in the battle against fascism? White people.
What is wrong with this picture?
Have some free time? Watch the State of the Black Union conference (make it a point to catch Michael Eric Dyson in the afternoon session at the 4:00 hr mark) and become enlightened as to who our leaders should be.
That’s what Manson thought.
Um, what are you talking about James?
i definitely think that we are expecting too much out of privelegded (sp?), rich milquetoast establishment types, or more than they can deliver… they’re just not going to get done what needs to be done right now, & that is to shake shit up & not worry about making enemies.
i’m not sure it boils down to being a minority, though that helps. i’m totally convinced that the difference between John Kerry & John Edwards (who wanted to concede & who wanted to stand & fight) is a background of wealth & privledge. It’s what made Bill Clinton stand out. It’s why Harry Reid- who could have totally sucked being a white, conservative, Mormon- threaten to “take {republicans} out behind the pool hall.” (he was also raised poor, the son of an alcoholic miner) It’s the “insider/outsider” thing. It’s the same reason all the dorks grow up to be cooler… the easier life is for you, the less of a full-fledged person you become.
Or that’s my theory, anyway.
