I was thinking specifically of what Main St. used to be like when I first started going to Royal Oak as a junior in high school. A lot of the stores and buildings were different and even though they tore quite a few of them down, the street doesn’t seem to look any different. It’s not like they were putting in high rises or anything. It looks like they just tore down some of the old structures and threw up similar ones with a little less charm.

I lived on 11 Mile just east of Main St. for a while. There was a large and seedy motel right across the street that was demolished so that a new loft complex could be built. This is just one example of a situation where the existing structure could not have been profitably utilized as it had zero charm and zero historic relevance. I don’t know many details about other developments in RO, but this was one case where the developers can’t be blamed for razing the existing building and starting fresh. Randy, you might have been thinking of this particular development amongst others when you formed your opinion, so I just thought I’d mention this.

I’m not quite sure what is happening in Royal Oak. I’ve heard that their program is run somewhat poorly.

Royal Oak doesn’t seem to be paying attention. They’re downtown is being revitalised but not with existing structures. Instead a bunch of condos and brand new buildings are being thrown up. Are they just ignoring the potential funds?
