South Dakota Bans Abortion!!!
So it begins. With a new look to the Supreme Court, South Dakota’s legislature and governor have decided to roll their holy dice and challenge Roe v. Wade. In a sweeping bill, South Dakota has defied the Supreme Court and have banned abortion to all women, unless their lives are in danger.
Hopefully their gamble will backfire and their bill will be shot down in the Court. This would strengthen Roe, almost beyond reach of the Anti-Choice Movement. But as sad as it might sound, I believe that this is only wishful thinking. The Court may not overturn Roe, but they now have the chance to weaken it significantly. I believe that this marks the beginning of a giant step backwards for the country.
I agree. This will literally catapult the U.S. into a much more medieval age. But then, are we at all surprised? Seemingly everything in this country is moving backwards in time and has been doing so since the Bush administration usurped the White House. So, instead of small pockets of backwards beliefs and processes of thinking, we now have a country run by these pockets. Welcome to the fruition of anti-intellectualism, my friends.
“I believe that this marks the beginning of a giant step backwards for the country.”
You think THIS marks the beginning? Hmm. No offense but, I’d say you’re a little late in the game Jeff.
He was too busy studying to realize we have a pilgrim for a president..

That news is nothing short of tragic, though not wholly unexpected. Perhaps I’m naive, but I grew up in a relatively “free” version of a communist society believing that America was different, that alongside the corporate greed, brash materialism and barely-there social security net, a unique society prospered – a land of unlimited opportunity and personal freedom. This America still exists, but it is rapidly and unexplainably being eroded by an administration that believes it can rule outside the rule of law.
I remember reading an interesting personal account of a British journalist who covered the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Moscow back in the 80’s. He was struck by a seemingly insignificant detail, how fascinated Gorbachev’s security men were with their American counterparts. As the two delegations negotiated the end of the Soviet Union inside the Kremlin, outside KGB agents marvelled at the air conditioning of the secret service agents’ Chevy Suburbans, the superior fabric of their suits. The Russians’ eyes revealed more than material envy, however, they betrayed the acknowledgment that the Americans represented to them the pinnacle of individual freedom, while they remained locked in the dark ages of a repressive state.
The author concludes by (rightly) wondering whether today’s Russians still marvel at America in the same way, an America that cannot clearly renounce torture as an acceptable method of interrogation, sanctions secret spying on anyone that president considers threatening and bans some fundamental human rights, such as abortion. The answer is probably no.
