Yeah, the neo-nazis. I have no idea, but as you might gather from my allusions to the "further east" parts of the Portland metro area being trashy, you can gather that there are areas where such ideologies thrive. Why? Who knows, but they're present and accounted for. Interestingly enough, as I rode the MAX one day, I overheard a conversation taking place between two of said trashy people loudly trash-talking the weirdos and liberals in Portland. I had to laugh, because I thought, "Those 'weirdos' are the ones that put that rail system in to extend out to where you live so that you and your DUI asses can ride it to get to your job of the week!"

the pearl definitely has the best croissants i've ever had. i actually prefer their plain to any of the others even though i'm generally a fan of an almond or chocolate croissant because i'm a glutton like that -- but their "plain" croissant is simplity perfected. it's just one block from adidas, so darleen used to stop there for breakfast all the time in the early days. i'm glad you finally stopped by there!

That's a great use for the lyric, isn't it?

The photo is actually the Pearl Bakery, but we never went there. The one we visited a few times was Grand Central Bakery over on Hawthorne. They have great stuff, too, but I was thoroughly more impressed by the Pearl Bakery. Their smaller (read: one) operation seemed more able to concentrate on the quality of breads that the larger (read: PacNW non-monstrous chain) Grand Central. However, if I lived close to a Grand Central, I would have zero qualms going there to get some morning munchies.

The only time I think we stopped for any sort of time in the Pearl District when you visited was when we ate and drank at the Bridgeport Brewpub. A lot in that area has changed. Most of it has been turned into either living spaces or art spaces or shops. It's really nice.
